English level C1 is the fifth level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a scale that describes language proficiency. It is considered to be an advanced level of English proficiency.
At level C1, learners can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning. They can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. They can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. They can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
Some examples of what a learner at level C1 can do include:
- Understand and participate in complex discussions on a variety of topics, even abstract and technical ones.
- Read and understand complex academic or literary texts.
- Write clear and well-structured essays and reports on complex topics.
- Give presentations on complex topics to a variety of audiences.
- Negotiate effectively in a variety of professional and social contexts.
Learners who have achieved level C1 in English are typically able to live and work in an English-speaking country without any major language difficulties. They are also well-prepared for academic study at an English-speaking university.
Here are some examples of English language tests that assess level C1 proficiency:
- Cambridge Advanced English (CAE)
- IELTS 7.0-7.5
- TOEFL iBT 100-110
